Free options guide
Free sleep tracker apps: what you really get for nothing
Many apps say free and then charge for the features you wanted. Here is how to find a genuinely free sleep tracker app, and how to track your sleep without installing anything.
Free sleep tracker apps: the honest guide
A free sleep tracker app is easy to find and hard to define. The app store is full of apps that cost nothing to download. Many then lock the sleep graph history, the smart alarm, the sleep sounds or the long-term trends behind a premium plan. Others are free because they make money from advertising or from data. This page separates the free tools that do a real job from the ones that only look free.
We will cover what free options exist, what to check before you install, and a no-install alternative: a private sleep diary that works in your browser. Product names are trademarks of their owners. We are not affiliated with any brand mentioned, and features, models and prices change, so check the maker's page before you buy.
Four kinds of free sleep tracking
1. Built-in phone features. iPhones include Sleep schedules, Sleep Focus and Health app sleep data, and many Android phones have a similar feature inside their health or digital wellbeing apps. They record when you intend to sleep and, with a watch, how you slept. 2. Free tiers of dedicated apps. Apps such as Sleep Cycle, Pillow and Sleep as Android have offered free or trial versions with limited features, while the full set requires a purchase or subscription. 3. Free apps that come with a device. If you own an Apple Watch, a Fitbit, a Galaxy Watch or a Garmin, the companion app shows sleep data at no extra charge for the core metrics. 4. Free manual tools. A sleep diary, whether on paper or online, costs nothing and records the facts that matter most.
What to check before you install
Open the app store listing and look for "in-app purchases". Then ask: can I see my history for more than a few days? Is the alarm included? Can I export my data? Does the app need a microphone, and does it store audio? Does it need an account? What does the privacy label say about data shared with third parties? If a feature you care about is premium, decide whether the free version is enough or whether a one-time paid app would be cheaper than a subscription.
How phone sleep apps work, and their limits
A phone app on your mattress uses the accelerometer to feel movement, or the microphone to hear breathing, snoring and rustling. It then estimates when you were asleep and awake. This works reasonably for bedtime, wake-up and total time, but separating sleep stages by sound and movement alone is much less reliable than using heart rate. Placement matters, shared beds confuse the sensor, and keeping the phone charging all night is a must. The method is also a drain on privacy if recordings are uploaded.
Privacy: what free can cost
Sleep data is sensitive: it shows when you are home, when you are awake and sometimes your health. Prefer apps that process data on your device, let you delete your account and data, and do not sell data. Avoid apps that ask for more permissions than they need. If privacy matters most, a local-only tool is the safest option. Our sleep diary and My sleep dashboard keep everything in your browser and have no accounts; read the privacy page.
A free sleep tracker with no app to install
The free online sleep diary records your bedtime, wake-up and how rested you feel, then shows a seven-day chart, your average sleep and how much your bedtime varies. It does not measure sleep stages or heart rate, but those are the least reliable numbers on consumer devices anyway. For planning, the bedtime calculator, wake-up calculator and sleep debt calculator use the same data to help you act. See our online sleep monitor page for how to combine them.
Free versus paid: when it is worth upgrading
Stay with free if your goal is to see roughly how long you sleep and how regular you are. Consider paying if you want an alarm that wakes you in a light-sleep window, a long history, health integrations or a dedicated device with good sensors. When you do upgrade, compare a one-time purchase with a subscription over three years, and read our guide to the best sleep trackers without a subscription.
Using free tracking well
Track for at least two weeks before drawing conclusions. Look at averages, not single nights. Change one habit at a time, such as a fixed wake-up time or an earlier caffeine cutoff, and watch the trend. If your tracking shows regular short sleep, loud snoring or long awake periods, talk to a doctor; no app replaces a clinical assessment.
A quick checklist for any free sleep app
Before relying on an app, check six things. Can I use it for a week without paying? Can I see my history and averages? Does it work without an account? Does it record audio, and where is it stored? Does it share data with advertisers? Can I delete everything? An app that passes most of these is a good fit. If it fails on several, look for another, or use a diary.
Free tools that pair well with a free tracker
A tracker tells you what happened. These free tools help you plan and respond. The wake-up calculator chooses alarm times, the nap calculator sets nap lengths, the sleep sound mixer offers background noise without a subscription and the breathing guide offers a wind-down technique. All are free and run offline in a browser.
Free trials and how to cancel them
Many apps offer a free trial of premium features and then charge automatically. Put a reminder in your calendar a day before the trial ends and check how to cancel through the app store, not only in the app. Cancelling during the trial usually keeps access until it ends. If an app makes cancellation hard to find, that tells you something.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free sleep tracker app?
It depends on your phone. The built-in options on iPhone and Android are free, and many apps have a free tier. A free sleep diary needs no app at all.
Are free sleep tracker apps accurate?
Phone apps are reasonable for bedtime, wake-up and total time and less reliable for sleep stages.
Do free sleep apps sell my data?
Some may share data with third parties. Read the privacy label and policy, and choose apps that keep data on your device.
Can I track sleep without an app?
Yes. A sleep diary on paper or online records the essentials and costs nothing.
Is Apple Health sleep tracking free?
Sleep schedules and data viewing in the Health app are free. Recording sleep automatically needs a compatible Apple Watch or a third-party device or app.
Can I export my sleep data?
Some apps let you export, others do not. Our tools let you download your data from My sleep.
