A wind-down routine that works: the last 30 minutes before bed
How to build a simple, repeatable evening routine, and how to use a countdown to keep to it.

Going straight from a bright, busy evening to bed rarely works. A short routine gives your brain a ramp down. Regular sleep habits are a core part of advice for better sleep (NHLBI).
A 30-minute template
- Dim the lights (about 30 minutes before).
- Put screens away. See why screen curfews help.
- Stretch or wash up.
- Read or relax quietly, or try breathing or a body scan.
- Lights out at your bedtime.
The wind-down timer turns this into a step-by-step countdown from your bedtime. You can choose a 20, 30 or 45-minute routine.
Tips
- Same order every night. Repetition is what makes it work.
- Start from your bedtime. Not sure when that is? Use the bedtime calculator.
- Keep it enjoyable. If a step feels like a chore, swap it.
- Be flexible on busy nights: a shorter routine beats none.
If you lie awake most nights for weeks, talk to a doctor.
